Description
Golden Triangle Construction Company completed construction in 2019 on repairs and expansion of an existing airport apron and a new fuel farm and fuel pump station access road located at the 911th Air Reserve Station located in Moon Township, PA. The repairs consisted of demolition and excavation of an old apron that housed 5 recently decommissioned C-130 aircraft for the United States Air Force. In the expansion, 7 new concrete parking spots were constructed to house new C-17 aircraft for the Air Reserve Station. Expanded taxi apron pavement was also constructed to allow the new aircraft to maneuver into their new 2-bay maintenance hangar that was built in conjunction with the apron and fuel project. Along with the upgrades to the apron pavement, the Reserve Station received a new consolidated fuel hydrant system fuel farm. GTC constructed monolithic concrete curb and roadway surrounding the new fuel tank and pump house, as well as sidewalk and concrete drainage work. GTC utilized a central mix concrete batch plant located nearby on airport property to supply the concrete to the project. The concrete pavement portion of the project began in the summer of 2018 and was completed by early fall of 2019.
Golden Triangle Construction found this to be a very challenging project. GTC was faced with very tight pavement smoothness tolerances, abnormal mix design requirements, over-crowded workspaces due to other sub-contractor work scheduled at the same time and the constant battle of protection of other aircraft from FOD. GTC was able to adjust work practices to meet and overcome the challenges that were faced on this project. Many of the tight tolerances on smoothness were adopted by the GTC quality control program and are what we now strive for on all projects, even when specifications are less stringent.
