Description
Molave Residence Hall, formerly Kanlaon Residence Hall (Main and Annex 1), was the very first student dormitory built in the University of the Philippines – Diliman that was for both male and female residents, in separate wings. This was designed by Cesar Concio, in 1949, and is currently catering to 190 undergraduate male students. The building has four floors; basement, ground, mezzanine, and second floors. There are also two major wings joined by a central portion with a dining hall, receiving rooms, mezzanine reading room, and recreation hall. Arch. Concio utilized high ceilings and large awning windows for natural light and ventilation. He also incorporated organic forms and patterns inside a rectilinear space to soften the otherwise very straight and bold look.
“Residence halls are more than mere provisions for board and lodging of students; they are institutions, which must fulfill more than the function of providing food and shelter to the students; they must also provide experience in liberal education through social interaction and group living”, as described in the Revised Residence Hall Rules and Regulations that was approved by U.P. President J.V. Abueva in 1990 . However, the building has also been subjected to the natural wear and tear due its constant use. Moreover, to be able to keep up with the increasing demand in safety and health, compliance to code standards, and cater to the needs of its users; the residence hall was renovated.
This project, bound by certain Heritage Laws, was subjected to the recommendations and approval of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.
