Mid Rise Buildings/Structures (4 -15 Stories)
Description
The project redefines the typology of traditional hotel rooms, by generating a flexible space that allegorizes the cabin suite typology. Similarly, the project incorporates the use of a repetitive module to achieve variety and uniqueness. Surprises and singularity were achieved with a radial room-module layout. By breaking the linearity, the project generates a journey escorted by lights, shadows, and vegetation, thus encouraging the user to walk through the entire building. During this journey, concrete walls appear to frame the natural landscape. Those walls, uniform in color and texture, eliminate distractions by allowing the eyes to focus on the water, the vegetation, and the sky. At that moment, the project creates an atmosphere of peace and calm. Moreover, the framed natural landscape is complemented by different textures. Thus, concrete shutters and reliefs come into play to enrich the experience. This is how the most important actor in the building, concrete, harmonizes architecture and technique, structure and space. Consequently, the greatest challenge of the project was to reconcile, through the deep exploration of the qualities of concrete, technical and spatial dualities, such as heavy vs. light, modular vs. singular, tradition vs. innovation; in addition to their architectural richness, the materials were selected thinking of their low environmental impact. By avoiding synthetic materials and prioritizing local materials with a low ecological footprint, the project was primarily built with stone, wood, and, of course, concrete. That material selection ensures the longevity and timelessness of the building. Architecture is thus a silent observer of human activity and the passage of time.
