Description
The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) is one of the flagship public-private partnerships of the Philippine Government. Developed by Filipino engineering innovator Megawide and Indian infrastructure conglomerate GMR, the 25-year contract includes the construction of a new international terminal and the renovation of the existing terminal.
MCIA is internationally-acclaimed as the Philippines’ Resort Airport. Its design celebrates its destination, Cebu, a favorite island resort destination among travelers.
The international terminal, Terminal 2 (T2), was constructed over a period of 36 months and began commercial operations on July 1, 2018. Designed by Integrated Design Associates Ltd. Hong Kong (IDA), with involvement from world-renowned Filipino designers, the new terminal embodies Cebu’s island heritage and the warmth of its culture, from architecture to interiors, ambience to quality of service.
The undulating roof arches, constructed using glued-laminated (glulam) timber, mimic the waves of the surrounding waters. Fair-faced concrete is used in juxtaposition to the bare timber arches and large glass panels, showing the contrast and harmony between the three materials. Together, they give an honest, open, and unmistakably modern Filipino feel to the structure.
The 65,000 square meter terminal was constructed using Megawide’s proprietary building technologies, including precast and batching. Construction time, as well as carbon footprint, was significantly reduced without compromising quality by using precast in landside works and glulam arches for a roof structure instead of steel. An onsite batching plant ensured a steady supply of concrete for structural requirements and reduced carbon emissions from vehicle movements.
Terminal 2 has increased MCIA’s total passenger capacity from just 4.5 million to 17 million, and its design can accommodate more passengers as the need arises. MCIA was the winner of the 2019 World Architecture Festival Completed Buildings: Transport Category.
