Description
Gujarat Cricket Association has envisaged to develop the existing stadium at Motera to be the world's largest cricket stadium ever built. The 110,000 seat Motera Cricket Stadium is an Engineering, Procurement and Construction brown field project executed by the Buildings & Factories vertical of L&T Construction. Scope of the project includes civil, structural and MEP works in the stadium, club house building, ancillary structures, internal roads, and landscaping work.
Construction of the stadium is predominantly with precast concrete. Apart from the VIP pavilion, here are 42 bays built with 9000 precast elements of different sizes and shapes ranging from 5 MT to 285 MT. As the stadium is oval, the geometry of elements is very intricate and unique. In such a setting the framing of work methodology is a challenging task. Some of the challenges include space constraints, which made it difficult for heavy cranes to be stationed longer onsite. That was a key factor in determining the construction sequence consisting of significant erection and assembly activities.
The project is designed to be environmentally friendly and construction was done adhering to quality and safety standards exceeding benchmarks prevailing in the local industry.
Salient features of the project include:
# Design of uninterrupted line of sight for all the spectators. A 1:1 scale mock-up of one single bay was witnessed by all the stakeholders to validate the design and check the line of sight.
# Clusters of LED lights placed on the steel roof eliminate shadow of players enhancing the viewing experience.
# State of the art drainage system to avoid long waiting period for resumption of play during interruption by rain.
# Awarded "Sword of Honor" in 2018 by the British Safety Council and has clocked 20 million safe man-hours with zero 'Loss of Time' injury.
